Sameer Rizvi started playing cricket at the age of eleven and started practicing the game at the Gandhibagh Academy in Meerut, where he was trained under the tutelage of his maternal uncle Tanqib Akhtar.
In 2011, Uttar In a Ranji Trophy match between Pradesh and Saurashtra, Rizvi caught the attention of Uttar Pradesh captain Suresh Raina, as Rizvi’s fielding efforts impressed Raina, who was only five years old at the time. Raina eventually replaced Rizvi.

Career
Rizvi debuted in first-class cricket on 27 January 2020 at 16, playing for Uttar Pradesh in the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy. By age 20, he had made a name for himself in the UP T20 League. His List A debut came on 11 December 2021, for Uttar Pradesh in the 2021–22 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
He shone in the 2023 UP T20 League, scoring 455 runs across nine innings, including two centuries—one being the tournament’s fastest, achieved in just 47 balls—while representing the Kanpur Superstars. Additionally, he became the team’s leading six-hitter. His performance drew interest from IPL teams like Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Rajasthan Royals, who invited him for trials. Commitments with the Uttar Pradesh Under-23 squad, however, prevented his attendance.
In December 2023, Chennai Super Kings secured him for a record 8.40 crore in the IPL 2024 auction. Following the auction, his home was besieged by media, neighbors, and a local politician. His auction price made him the highest-paid, most expensive uncapped player in the IPL 2024.
